ARAN SUPERMARKET

CASE STUDY

Complete Branding & Printing Package for Aran Supermarket (Kandy)

When Aran Supermarket prepared to strengthen its customer presence in Kandy, the management approached Nilan Printing Press with a clear requirement: they needed a complete set of branding and printing materials that would make the supermarket look organised, trustworthy, and professional from every angle. In Sri Lanka’s retail environment – especially in busy cities like Kandy – customers often judge a shop’s reliability within the first few seconds. Clean branding and well-made printed materials play a major role in building that confidence.

The first challenge was consistency. Like many growing supermarkets in Sri Lanka, Aran Supermarket had several printed items being produced at different times, in different styles, and sometimes from different sources. That created a mixed appearance—different fonts, colours and layouts. Our role was to bring everything into one aligned brand identity, so that every printed item – from the smallest label to large banners – looked like it belonged to the same business.

We began with brand direction and logo refinement. The supermarket name needed to be clearly readable and suitable for multiple uses: signage, business cards, invoice layouts and promotional materials. In Sri Lanka, a logo must work in both colour and single-colour printing. We ensured the design could be printed sharply and still look strong on low-cost paper products like bill books, while also appearing premium on customer-facing items.

Once the logo and brand look were finalised, we designed business cards for the owners and staff. Retail business cards in Kandy are often exchanged with suppliers, delivery partners, and wholesale contacts, so the design had to feel corporate rather than casual. We chose a clean layout with proper spacing, strong contrast, and clear contact details—especially phone and WhatsApp—since that is the most common communication method for Sri Lankan suppliers and partners.

Next, we developed bill books and invoice books—a daily essential for supermarkets in Sri Lanka. Even with modern systems, printed bill books remain widely used for credit records, supplier tracking, and customer requests. We ensured the layout supported easy writing with well-sized fields for date, customer details, item descriptions, quantities, and totals. In addition, we kept the typography clear so that staff could fill entries quickly without confusion during busy hours.

Rubber stamps were another key requirement for Aran Supermarket’s daily operations. In Sri Lankan retail administration, stamps such as “PAID”, “RECEIVED”, and a company name stamp help maintain organised records and reduce errors. We produced stamps that were durable and clean in impression, avoiding overly thin lettering that can fade over time. This simple tool made internal paperwork faster and improved the professionalism of the supermarket’s supplier documentation.

For customer-facing marketing, we created promotional handbills tailored to the Kandy market. Supermarket promotions work best when the design is easy to understand in seconds. We structured the handbills to highlight key offers and popular household items, ensuring prices were readable and the call-to-action was clear. In cities like Kandy, where flyers are often read at bus stops and near town shopping areas, clarity and bold pricing presentation greatly improve response.

We also produced posters and banners for outdoor visibility. Large-format printing requires different design logic: fewer words, stronger contrast, and bold messaging. Aran Supermarket needed banners that could attract both regular customers and passers-by. We emphasised the supermarket name, special offers and contact details, ensuring the design remained readable even at a distance and under sunlight—an important consideration in Sri Lanka’s outdoor conditions.

Another component was labelling support. In Sri Lankan supermarkets, in-house packing is common for products such as spices, grains, and dry foods. We provided label designs that allowed space for the packed date, weight, and pricing—practical fields that staff use daily. The labels were made to look clean and premium, helping the supermarket’s own packed goods appear more professional and trustworthy compared to generic packaging.

The outcome was a full set of print products that gave Aran Supermarket a unified and reliable brand presence in Kandy. Customers could see consistency in every interaction—from shopping and promotions to receipts and packaging. For supermarkets in Sri Lanka, this level of branding improves long-term customer trust and makes the business feel larger, stronger and more established.
